INTERNAL MEDICINE – SMALL ANIMAL

 

  1. ANESTHESIA and ANALGESIA – 8% of test

 

    1. TASK – Working with the veterinarian, perform a pre anesthetic and/or assessment of pain examination of the patient and a review of the medical history, previous protocols, and diagnostic tests of the patient in order to optimize anesthesia or analgesia.  2% of test
    2. TASK – Working with the veterinarian, develop or assess an anesthetic plan including routes of administration that optimizes patient safety by addressing risk factors and is appropriate to the procedure.  2% of test
    3. TASK – Working with the veterinarian, develop or assess an analgesic plan that optimizes patient safety and comfort and is appropriate to the procedure or condition.  2% of test
    4. TASK – Working with the veterinarian, implement an anesthetic plan and/or analgesic plan, including patient monitoring, to optimize the personnel and patient safety and the efficacy of the plan.  2% of test

 

  1. BODY MECHANICS and SYSTEMS – (Anatomy and Physiology) – 25% of test

 

    1. TASK – Identify the anatomy of dogs and cats to enhance animal care.  14% of test
    2. TASK – Demonstrate a thorough understanding of organ systems to enhance animal care.  5% of test
    3. TASK – Demonstrate a detailed understanding of physiology of dogs and cats to enhance animal care including but not limited to the following body systems: neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal (including metabolism), endocrine, reproductive (including lactation), renal, respiratory and hemostasis.  5% of test
    4. TASK – Understand and explain excretions, absorption and secretions to enhance animal care.  1% of test

 


  1. DIAGNOSTIC and LABORATORY TESTS and STUDIES – 23% of test
    1. TASK – Collect appropriate specimen(s) for diagnostic evaluation taking into account risk factors to the patient associated with various sample collections and recognize changes to laboratory values that can be caused secondary to the method of collection of a sample.  7% of test
    2. TASK – Perform diagnostic tests and studies as prescribed by the veterinarian (i.e. auscultation, diagnostic imaging, measurement of blood pressure) to ensure diagnostic, quality results.  4% of test
    3. TASK – Perform laboratory tests and studies including proper patient preparation for various diagnostic testing (i.e. appropriate fasting, enema, etc.) as prescribed by the veterinarian (i.e. microscopy, clotting tests, cross match) to ensure diagnostic, quality results and demonstrate appropriate handling and shipping (including legal requirements) of diagnostic samples.  6% of test
    4. TASK – Discuss indications for use and interpretation of results for diagnostic tests and studies with the veterinarian and/or client to provide optimal patient care.  2% of test
    5. TASK – Maintain diagnostic and laboratory equipment, including quality control procedures, to ensure accurate results and maintain safety through out the process.  3% of test
    6. TASK - Identify risk factors to self and hospital personnel associated with handling of zoonotic or infectious samples and appropriate means of protection.  1% of test

 

  1. DISEASES – 14% of test
    1. TASK – Recognize and discuss signs, symptoms, complications, common concurrent disease states, pathology, pathophysiology and outcomes of disease with the veterinarian and/or client in order to provide optimal patient care.  5% of test
    2. TASK – Discuss the transmission, pathways and etiology of diseases with the veterinarian and/or client to provide optimal patient care and ensure biosafety.  4% of test
    3. TASK – Discuss immunology and disease prevention with the veterinarian and/or client to provide optimal patient care including risk factors associated with certain disease prevention protocols and patients most likely to be affected by these factors.  2% of test
    4. TASK – Recognize and discuss risks of iatrogenic development of a disease state due to various treatments.  3% of test

 


  1. PHARMACOLOGY – 10% of test
    1. TASK –Perform drug calculations as directed by the veterinarian to ensure patient and client safety.  3% of test
    2. TASK – Comprehend, anticipate and recognize drug reactions, contraindications, interactions, absorption, administration protocols and mechanics of commonly used medications in internal medicine cases to ensure patient, client and personnel safety.  4% of test
    3. TASK – Calculate, formulate, and administer the proper nutritional requirements of animals and disease states to optimize patient care.  2% of test
    4. TASK – Discuss special handling, administration, complications and side effects of chemotherapeutic or immunosuppressive medications utilized in internal medicine cases for the patients, hospital personnel and/or clientele.  1% of test

 

  1. ANIMAL CARE, MANAGEMENT, NURSING & TREATMENT – 20% of test
    1. TASK - Calculate, formulate, administer and monitor the proper prescribed fluid therapy treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian to achieve optimal fluid and electrolyte balance and identify potential complications of various fluid therapies.  3% of test
    2. TASK - Working with the veterinarian, discuss treatment indications and possible reactions, both favorable and adverse to enhance patient care.  4% of test
    3. TASK – Monitor the patient through out the treatment plan acknowledging common post procedure complications to ensure patient health and safety.  8% of test
    4. TASK – Safely provide access to various body systems.  2% of test
    5. TASK – Safely restrain and handle animals in order to optimize patient outcome and ensure personnel safety.  2% of test
    6. TASK – Demonstrate proper barrier nursing and isolation protocol for various infectious and/or zoonotic diseases.  1% of test
    7. TASK – Recognize increased risks and demonstrate appropriate nursing care associated with long term recumbent patients.  <1% of test
