AIMVT Exam Prerequisites

Have a minimum of 3 years with 6,000 hours of experience as a credentialed veterinary technician in the field of Internal Medicine. All experience must be completed within five years prior to application.Spend at least 75% of his/her time in the area of specialization in Internal Medicine. Have a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education. A minimum of 70% of the hours must be within your subspecialty, up to 30% of the hours may be within the realm of general internal medicine. The continuing education must be completed within five years prior to application. Proof of attendance is required. Submission of continuing education information must be on the AIMVT form. Continuing education must be RACE certified or its equivalent.

Provide documentary evidence of advanced competence in the selected area of specialization of internal medicine through clinical experience, as demonstrated by completion of the Advanced Veterinary Internal Medicine Technician skill form.

Provide documentary evidence of advanced knowledge of disease states and processes in the selected area of specialization of internal medicine through completion of the Advanced Veterinary Internal Medicine Knowledge Form.

The requirements for Case Logs are that they are to include cases from October 1st of the preceding year through September 30th of the year of application. Cases should be entered sequentially into the log beginning with the earliest date and proceeding to the last date.
The AIMVT case log form format must be utilized. The case logs should be typed for ease of reading. Brevity is required. The complete Case Log must be included on the CD Rom.
A minimum of fifty cases must be recorded. Multiple visits by the same patient count as only 1 case unless presented for an entirely new problem. They can be utilized to demonstrate advanced nursing skills but they will not count towards your total case count after the initial entry. Over submission of cases is encouraged in case of disqualification, with a maximum number of cases set at 75.
Cases selected should reflect management of patients in the area of sub specialization of application.
Cases selected should demonstrate your mastery of the advanced nursing skills. Every effort to document a wide variety of your advanced nursing skills should be reflected in your case selection. Basic technician skills do not need to be listed. Repetitive listing of skills may lead to disqualification of the case from the log.

Four in depth case reports selected from the case report log demonstrating expertise in the nursing management of a variety of internal medicine veterinary patients. All case reports are to be written in the style of the 3rd person.

Submit three potential examination questions specific to the area of specialty.
9. Letters of Recommendation Requirements -

Two letters of recommendation from a VTS (Internal Medicine ) , or a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine . (Until there are sufficient numbers of the aforementioned, letters of recommendation will be accepted from the following: VTS (Anesthesia) or (Emergency & Critical Care), Diplomates in Anesthesia, Emergency & Critical Care, Internal Medicine, or Surgery). If none of these Diplomates or VTS is available the Academy will accept one letter of recommendation from a licensed DVM with a letter from them stating that no Diplomate or VTS is easily available for the candidate to utilize. Letters of recommendation are due September 1st.
Abbreviations The preceding list contains accepted abbreviations that may be used without expansion. All other abbreviations must be expanded when first used.
Lab Sheet The preceding form should be utilized to report CBCs, Chemistries and Urinalysis results in case reports.
